Research

2008

  • Design and construction of a 'PseudoSquid', an LED device designed to mimic deep-sea squid bioluminescence, to explore squid reactions to squid bioluminescence.

2007

  • Examining reactions of deep-sea animals to deep-sea squid ink using a newly designed and constructed 'Ink Ejector' to release ink using a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV).
  • Liquid chromatography-mass spectrocopy analyses of deep-sea cephalopod ink. Collaboratior: Dr. Ulla Anderson, University of California, Berkeley.
  • Survey of chromatic, locomotor, postural, and bioluminescent components in the mesopelagic squid Octopoteuthis deletron.

2006

  • Assistant intern coordinator/intern, exploring arm autotomy and defensive behavior in the deep-sea squid Octopoteuthis deletron. Advisors: Dr. George Matsumoto & Dr. Bruce Robison, Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute.

2005

  • Investigated the reaction of the stomatopods Pseudosquilla ciliata and Gonodactylaceus falcatus to the ink of the squid Euprymna scolopes, Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology, Coconut Island.
  • Influence of available light spectrum on cryptic coloration in the stomatopod Neogonodactylus wenerrae.

2004

  • Influence of substrate coloration and the presence or absence of algae on camouflage in the stomatopod Pseudosquilla ciliata.
  • Burrow formation in the stomatopod Odontodactylus havanensis.

2003

  • Summer Intern, studied ink release behavior of mid-water squids in Monterey Bay. Advisor: Dr. Bruce Robison, Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute.
  • Recorded behavior, identified individuals and obtained underwater photographs for a study on the ontogenetic development of sexual displays in the Caribbean reef squid, Sepioteuthis sepiodea. Collaborator: Jennifer Mather, University of Lethbridge.
  • Determined the upper lethal temperature and variability of the heat shock response in the sea anemone, Metridium senile. Independent study, East/West Marine Biology Program, advisor: Dr. Michael Lesser, University of New Hampshire.
  • Examined the role of heterotrophy in the nutrition and distribution of the apozooxanthellate coral, Tubastrea coccinea, within Discovery Bay, Jamaica.  Independent study, East/West Marine Biology Program, advisor: Dr. Pete Edmunds, California State University, Northridge.

2002

  • Studied rates of primary productivity in Friday Harbor, Washington, using a 14C time-course. Independent study, East/West Marine Biology Program, advisor: Dr. Jan Newton, University of Washington
  • Tested for the presence of bioactive compounds in freshwater bryozoans in collaboration with Dr. Elizabeth Balser, Illinois Wesleyan University

2001

  • Designed and implemented research on the settlement and re-colonization of acroporid corals in Pioneer Bay, Orpheus Island Research Station, Australia
  • Assisted with various research projects and station upkeep at Orpheus Island Research Station, James Cook University, Australia
