LAUNCH DAY 2004 was a special one-day event for incoming first-year and transfer students considering majors in Astronomy and/or Physics. It took place on Wednesday of Cal's Welcome Week (August 25, 2004), and featured fun and informational activities designed to introduce new students to the Physics and Astronomy departments. LAUNCH DAY 2004 was a great success, with over 50 new students attending!

LAUNCH DAY EVENT SCHEDULE

noon - 1:00 PM; meet in 375 LeConte
  Off-Campus Lunch
Join other incoming majors and a graduate student leader for a free introduction to some of our local cuisine. Email us in advance if you can, but it's not necessary. Come one, come all!

1:00 - 2:30 PM, 375 LeConte Hall
  Workshop: Life as an Astro/Physics Major
Get advice about courses and scheduling from departmental representatives; find out about campus groups and resources for Astronomy and Physics majors; hear from current students about their experiences and what to expect in your first year at Cal.

2:30 - 4:00 PM; meet in 375 LeConte Hall
  Professor Scavenger Hunt
This game will give you a chance to meet and get to know your professors, as well as to explore the Astronomy and Physics buildings.

4:00 - 5:00 PM, 375 LeConte Hall
  Panel Discussion: Study Skills
Experienced students, professors, and GSI's (teaching assistants) will share their secrets for doing well in undergraduate physical science courses.

5:00 - 6:00 PM; meet in 375 LeConte Hall
  Lab Tours/Free Time
Tour some local research labs, hang out with new friends, or just take a break before dinner.

6:00 - 8:00 PM, courtyard between LeConte and Birge Halls
  Barbecue Dinner
The Society of Physics Students (SPS) will grill up hamburgers, hot dogs, and veggie options in the courtyard. Meet and mingle with your classmates and other department members. Free food for all Launch Day attendees!

8:00 - 10:00 PM, 7th floor Campbell Hall
  Star Party
Meet on the roof of Campbell to watch the sunset over the bay and look through the telescope. If it's overcast, come anyway and we'll do something else fun! (To get to the roof, take the elevator to the 6th floor, go around the corner to the left, and climb one flight of stairs.)
