The chart below lists (last updated April 15, 2005) Socrates email products and services and whether or not they will work post-migration. Please be aware that this chart describes program behavior AFTER the migration, and is not necessarily applicable now. We will update this chart as more information becomes available.

BearMail for Socrates Webmail client for Socrates Yes After migration you will need to put your full @socrates.berkeley.edu address in the Username box,  rather than just your Socrates username.
Biff Informs when new email arrives in INBOX No Since incoming email will no longer be delivered to Socrates, biff will not see new email.
Elm Email client No Elm cannot function as a pop or IMAP client. Supported alternatives: POP or IMAP clients supported by CalMail, or CalMail web interface. Also Pine on socrates when configured as an IMAP client, See: http://socrates.berkeley.edu/Migration/pine.html. Mutt is probably a better alternative for those who appreciate elm's "look and feel". See: http://socrates.berkeley.edu/Migration/mutt.html. Address book conversion tool: /usr/local/bin/elm2mutt converts elm aliases to mutt.
Fetchmail Retrieves mail from a POP or IMAP server Expected to work Release 5.4.1 is currently installed on Socrates. This program has not yet been tested but is expected to continue to function. We plan to test a sample .rc file with CalMail and see if CalMail will support it.
.forward files Forwards email to addresses or programs No CalMail has its own tool for email forwarding. For an explanation of how forwarding on CalMail works and instructions on how to set up forwarding, please go to http://kb.berkeley.edu and search on "forwarding". FormMail, Formmail.pl FormMail is a generic HTML form to email gateway that parses the results of any form and sends them to the specified users. It is sent my the userid (login name) that runs the webserver. Yes, but may require modification. If you use this or similar applications on a website that runs as your userid (login name) on Socrates, you will need to either have a userid of the sanme name in the socrates subdomain on CalMail or be able to modify your return email address within the script.

Hypermail Hypermail is a program that takes a file of mail messages in UNIX mailbox format and generates a set of cross-referenced HTML documents. Expected to work, however… If you invoke hypermail from your .forward file on Socrates, this will not work post-migration because .forward files will no longer function post- migration. If you use your .forward file to run hypermail, you will need to find another way to move new email to Socrates and invoke Hypermail.
Mail "Berkeley" mail client Limited Post migration, you will still be able to use the mail command to send email. If you have a script that sends email using mail, or if you use "mail" to send email from the command line, it should work. However, email delivered to @socrates.berkeley.edu addresses will be delivered to the CalMail system, not Socrates. No new email will show up if you invoke "mail " at the command line. For this reason we recommend that Socrates users currently using mail in "interactive" mode switch to an email client supported by CalMail. We have two addressbook conversion tools available for mail users. They are /usr/local/bin/brk2pine.sh (converts to pine format), and /usr/local/bin/brk2mutt.sh (converts to mutt format).
Maillist simple list management tool No Socrates maillists were migrated to http://lists.berkeley.edu on March 27, 2005.
Mailx mailx, interactive message processing system. Yes/No Post migration, you will still be able to use the mailx command to send email. Email delivered to @socrates.berkeley.edu addresses will be delivered to the CalMail system, not Socrates. No new email we We recommend that Socrates users currently using mail in "interactive" mode switch to an email client supported by CalMail. We have addressbook conversion tools available. /usr/local/bin/brk2pine.sh converts mail/mailx addressbooks to pine format. /usr/local/bin/brk2mutt.sh converts addressbooks to mutt format.
Metamail In Unix, metamail is a utility for integrating MIME into electronic mail programs like Elm, MH, and Berkeley mail. When a mail program encounters a non-text message that it cannot itself handle, it calls metamail to decode and, if possible, display it. Expected to work We expect this will continue to function.
MH Unix mail packages. Each command is a separate program, called independently from command line. ie: list the contents of the current mail folder, enter: scan. After command executes, Unix shell is immediately available. Pipes, redirection, history, and aliases work as they do with any other Unix command. Ie: pipe output of scan to less: scan | less
Expected to work We expect that these commands will continue to function. However since no new email will be delivered to the Socrates server after the migration, users may find that these commands are no longer useful.
Mhmail Please see above Expected to work Unknown at this time
