Q1. What exactly to you mean by an “Email Migration”?

Socrates email is going to be converted to a Departmental Domain on the CalMail system. All email addressed to @socrates.berkeley.edu email addresses will be delivered to the CalMail system instead of the Socrates server. Qpopper, the service that allows users to POP their email, will be shut off.  Socrates will no longer deliver or relay email from other machines.

Q2. When will the Email Migration take place?

The migration originally scheduled for Sunday March 27, 2005, has been rescheduled for Sunday April 24, 2005. Qpopper service will be shut off and email delivery will be routed to the CalMail system. We will also create @socrates.berkeley.edu email accounts on the CalMail system and migrate user inboxes (the contents of your /var/mail file) to the CalMail system.

Q3. How will the migration affect me? What do I need to do to prepare for this change?

1.You need to decide which of our Email Migration Options is best for you. These options and required actions are described in Question 4.

 2. You should check and make sure that the mail programs and tools that you currently use on Socrates will be supported after the migration. Please see Question 5 for an explanation of what will and won’t be supported.

Q4.  What are my Email Migration Options?

There are two basic options:

Option 1) Retain your socrates mail address and have the mail forwarded to a berkeley.edu account on the CalMail system. The account will have the standard 100mb quota.

If you choose this option, you'll need to migrate your account

        using the instructions in http://socrates.berkeley.edu/Migration/migrationinstruct.html

If you do this now, you'll be able to get everything set up

and working prior to the migration so that you won't have to

        worry in April.

You can also choose to have your mail forwarded to an email

system other than CalMail, but you'll need to coordinate

migration issues with the administrator of that system.

Option 2) Retain a separate Socrates email address on the CalMail system with a 100mb quota.

If you want to have a separate mailboxes for a berkeley.edu

address and a socrates.berkeley.edu address, send email to

socrates_consult@berkeley.edu so that we'll know that's what you want.

Please check that you aren't currently forwarding your socrates

email to an existing CalMail account. When the migration occurs a

socrates.berkeley.edu address will be created for you on the

CalMail system.  This is true whether or not you have an

existing berkeley.edu account.  Once your account has been

migrated, you'll need to update your mail reader to access the

CalMail system or you may need to use a new mail reader.

Q4.5. I've chosen to retain a separate Socrates email address on the CalMail system. (Option2 in Q4 above) and was told that I'd have to reconfigure my email client after the migration. How do i do that?

If you use the CalMail web interface that change is extremely simple:
You will just need to login using your complete socrates email address <username>@socrates. However many of our users use POP clients such as Eudora and Outlook. Post-migration instructions for these and other common POP email clients are available at: http://socrates.berkeley.edu/Migration/pop/index.html. If you want to use Pine to access both your @berkeley.edu and @socrates.berkeley.edu accounts on CalMail, you should be able to do that by adding a folder collection to your pine configuration. Instructions for using Pine with your Socrates email after the migration are available at: Using Pine with CalMail.

Q5.  What mail programs and utilities will be supported after the migration? Will I have to switch email tools? What changes will I have to make?

Socrates currently supports a wide range of email tools and programs. Our Email Support Chart lists each element of Socrates email service, whether or not it will be supported after the migration, and whether or not you need to make any changes.  It also describes supported alternatives for those programs and utilities that will no longer work. You should take a look at the chart and make sure that the email tools you currently use will continue to work.  Some tools may require configuration adjustments on your part.  There are also some programs that we will be unable to support after the migration. In that case, you will need to decide which of the supported alternatives works best for you.

Q6. What if I don’t choose a migration option? What if I don’t check to see if my email programs will work? In other words, what happens to my email after the migration if I do nothing?

If you do not choose a migration option between now and April 24th, we will attempt to migrate your Socrates email account for you. Assuming we have a valid staff/student or affliate id and your account is in good standing, a socrates.berkeley.edu email account will be created for you on the CalMail system, regardless of  whether or not you have an existing berkeley.edu account. If you have a .forward file in your Socrates account at the time of the migration, we will try to move it to your socrates.berkeley.edu account on the CalMail system. If we are able to migrate your account, your Socrates email will be delivered to your Socrates account on the CalMail system, but you may not be able to access it until you have changed your email client settings. If we are not able to migrate your account, you will not be able to receive email at your @socrates.berkeley.edu address, or access your @socrates.berkeley.edu email until you contact us and we are able to assist you.

If you do not check our Email Support Chart, you may suddenly find that your email programs no longer work after the migration. You may have to spend time and effort finding alternatives to unsupported products or switching your email client settings.

Q6.2 Are all Socrates accounts eligible for a @socrates.berkeley.edu account on CalMail?

You cannot have a @socrates.berkeley.edu email address after the email migration if:
-Your Socrates account is cancelled
-Your Socrates account was first created after March 17, 2005.
-Your Socrates account is a "student class account"
-If your Socrates account was not created using with a valid student, staff or affiliate id
-You have chosen to give up your Socrates email address

Q6.4 Will any @socrates.berkeley.edu email accounts be created after the migration on April 24th?

No. No new @socrates.berkeley.edu email accounts will be created on CalMail after the migration. The Socrates email migration is a one-time migration intended to accomodate those Socrates users who have used their @socrates.berkeley.edu email address for a substantial amount of time and thus cannot be expected to suddenly stop using it. Regardless of whether you have a Socrates account now or in the future, we can only create @socrates.berkeley.edu CalMail accounts on the migration date.

Q6.6 I received a notice from you saying I have "multiple Socrates accounts". What does that mean?

While the Socrates system permits multiple accounts created with the same staff, student of affiliate id, the CalMail system requires that there be only one @socrates.berkeley.edu Mail account per id. This means that as things are now, ONLY ONE of your accounts listed above can have an @socrates email address after the Migration. We realize this would be a major problem in cases where users have more than one Socrates account that they use for email. There are several possible workaround for this problem, that's why we've contacted you to see how to best resolve this problem.

Q6.7 Why should I respond to your Multiple Accounts Notice? All my Socrates accounts already forward email to CalMail or elsewhere. I've already migrated my Socrates email to CalMail!

Even if it does nothing more than forward your @socrates.berkeley.edu email to your @berkeley.edu account, a @socrates.berkeley.edu email address hosted on the CalMail system is still considered "an account" with regard to the "one account per id"
rule. As a result we still need you to contact us so that we can resolve the issue and make sure that email will continue to work for you after the migration.

Q6.8 I got a notice saying my Socrates "student class account" will not have an email address after the migration. What does that mean?

Socrates currently provides an "email identity" for each student class account. Each student in a class can send and receive email using the email address class-xy@socrates.berkeley.edu (where class is the name of the class and xy is 2 character suffix unique to each account). After the migration we will no longer provide email addresses for student class accounts. Mail addressed to these accounts will bounce. These student class accounts will still be able to be used for general Unix purposes.

Q7. What will happen to emails sent to myaddress@socrates.berkeley.edu after the migration?

It depends on what Migration Option you have chosen (see Question 4 for migration options).  If you have chosen to give up your @socrates.berkeley.edu email identity, email addressed to your @socrates.berkeley.edu email address will bounce back to the sender as an “Unknown User”. If you have chosen Migration Option 1, your @socrates.berkeley.edu will be delivered to your @berkeley.edu email account on the CalMail system. If you have chosen Option 2, your @socrates.berkeley.edu email will be delivered to your @socrates.berkeley.edu account on the CalMail system.

Q8: Will I be able to use my Socrates email address as my "From:" email address after the migration?

If you have chosen to take the 100MB bonus or otherwise elected to not have use of an @socrates.berkeley.edu address, you will NOT be able to use your @socrates.berkeley.edu address after the migration. If you have selected the other options, you will be able to use your @socrates.berkeley.edu address as your “From:” address. In some cases you may need to manually set your "From:" address to your @socrates.berkeley.edu address in your email client settings.

Q8.4: What will be my my email password after the migration?

On migration day Socrates passwords will be copied to @socrates.berkeley.edu accounts on the CalMail system. If you have chosen to have separate mailboxes for your @ berkeley.edu email and your @socrates.berkeley.edu email, you will use your Socrates password to access your @socrates.berkeley.edu account on CalMail. If you have chosen to have your @socrates.berkeley.edu email forwarded to your @berkeley.edu Calmail account, you will continue to use your CalMail password to access your email after the migration.

Q9: Will I still be able to use BearMail for Socrates?
BearMail for Socrates will be supported post-migration. After the migration, Socrates BearMail users will need to login by typing "username@socrates.berkeley.edu" into the Username field, instead of just "username" and selecting the "socrates.berkeley.edu" from the drop down box. Please note that after June 2005, BearMail will be retired. See http://bearmail.berkeley.edu for details regarding abatement of the BearMail service.

Q10:  Will I be able to continue using POP clients like Eudora, Outlook and Netscape mail after the migration?

Yes. These products are supported for use with CalMail.

Q11: Will socrates be available for non-email related uses including web hosting, after the migration?

Yes. Socrates will continue to function as a General Unix server. Socrates will continue to provide computational software, web publishing, file service and general UNIX computing for the Berkeley Campus. Mathematical and Statistical software will also remain available for use.

Q12:  Will I still be able to login to Socrates via SSH or telnet after the migration?

Yes and no. Socrates will continue to function as a general purpose Unix server. You will still be able to log in via SSH. However telnet access to Socrates will be turned off on June 1, 2005. See: SSH and Telnet for details.

Q13:  Will I still be able to use Pine on Socrates? Will I be able to view my Pine mail folders on Socrates?

Yes. We have instructions at http://socrates.berkeley.edu/Migration/pine.html. These instructions will guide you through the process of setting up Pine for use with the CalMail system. They also show how to set up folder collections so that you can view email already stored on the Socrates Server as well as all your CalMail IMAP folders.

Q14: Will elm be supported post migration?

No.  Elm users will have to switch to a supported alternative.  Mutt probably is the best alternative for those who like Elm. We have an address book conversion tool to convert Elm address books to Mutt format at: /usr/local/bin/elm2mutt. Please see our Email Support Chart for more details about elm and converting elm address books. For instructions on how to use Mutt on Socrates, please see Using Mutt on Socrates after the Email Migration.

Q15: Will APOP be supported?

No. The CalMail system does not support APOP. It does support SSL/POP.  Socrates Email Migration to CalMail: Updating your POP client settings has instructions for how to use POP with @socrates.berkeley.edu email.

Q16: I own one or more maillists on Socrates. What will happen to these lists after the migration?

The Socrates maillist migration was completed on March 27, 2005. At that time each Socrates maillist was converted to a lists.berkeley.edu simple maillist with the name listname@lists.berkeley.edu. Also at that time @socrates.berkeley.edu email addresses for these lists were disabled. Any email sent to listname@socrates.berkeley.edu will be bounced back to sender with the message User has moved, try listname@lists.berkeley.edu

Q17: What do I need to do to prepare for the maillist migration?

The maillist migration has already been completed. We were not able to move a small number of lists because the Socrates list owner did not have a @berkeley.edu CalMail account. We have notified the owners of these paritcular maillists via email. If you are one of these users, you need to make sure you have a @berkeley.edu CalMail account by April 3rd, 2005, or we will delete your Socrates maillists.

Q18: How can I get a list of my Socrates maillists?

Log in to your Socrates account and issue the command:

maillist -l

Q19: I want to keep some or all of my maillists. What do I need to do?

Maillists existing on Socrates as of March 27, 2005. Have been migrated to the lists.berkeley.edu system. In some cases we were not able to move a list to the lists.berkeley.edu system. We have notified the owners of such lists via email.

Q20: Can I have maillists on lists.berkeley.edu that have the same name as my Socrates maillists? Or do I have to choose new names?

Socrates maillists were migrated to the lists.berkeley.edu system with the same name. If you owned the list <my-email-list>@socrates.berkeley.edu, your list has been moved to the lists.berkeley.edu system with the name: <my-email-list>@lists.berkeley.edu.

Q21: Will there be any transition period to allow for the change from socrates.berkeley.edu listnames to lists.berkeley.edu listnames? Or do I have to wait until March 27 to have my listmembers start using the new address for my lists?

Socrates maillists were automatically set up on lists.berkeley.edu on March 27th.

Q22: Will lists.berkeley.edu listnames work before March 27?

Maillists on lists.berkeley.edu started functioning as soon as they were created. If you created lists on the lists.berkeley.edu system before March 27, they have worked since before March 27. Otherwise lists.berkeley.edu listnames were created during the migration on March 27.

Q23: What if I already have a list with the same name on the lists.berkeley.edu system? Is there anything I need to do?

No.

Q24: What happens to my Socrates maillists if I do nothing?

We attempted to migrate your maillists on 27, 2005. If we were not able to do so we contacted you via email.

Q25: Will my webpage URL change as a result of this migration?

No. URLs will not be changed.

Q26: Do you plan to stop delivery to @socrates email addresses at some future date?
Not at this time. There is no set abatement date for mail delivery to @socrates.berkeley.edu email addresses. However Socrates accounts created after March 17 will NOT have use of an @socrates.berkeley.edu email address. No new @socrates.berkeley.edu email addresses will be created after the migration. You can still get a Socrates account after the migration, but use of an @socrates.berkeley.edu email address will no longer be part of the Socrates’ service.

Q27: Are you going to move my Socrates inbox and mail folders to CalMail?

Folders and files currently stored in your Socrates’ home directory, including email folders and files, will remain on the Socrates Server after the migration. Email stored in /var/mail, the default “INBOX” for most email clients, will be migrated to the INBOX of your @socrates.berkeley.edu account when it is created, unless you have given up use of your @socrates.berkeley.edu email identity (taken our bonus offer or otherwise indicated to us that your Socrates account does not need an email address). In that case, your Socrates INBOX will NOT be moved to the CalMail system.

Q28: Can I get a copy of my Socrates INBOX?

Some users want to keep the content of their Socrates inbox online. One way to do this is to set up an existing CalMail account to do a one-time retrieval of email from Socrates. Please see our RPOP instructions.

Q29: Can I move my Socrates INBOX to CalMail?

Yes. You can move the contents of your Socrates INBOX to your CalMail account by following our RPOP instructions.

Q30: What if I want to upload my Socrates mail folders to CalMail?

Probably the easiest way to do this is to use Pine's aggregate commands function to move mail folders from one folder collection to another. See: Using Pine with CalMail for details on how to enable aggregate commands and move mail folders.

Q31: Will the migration break my address books?

Not necessarily. Please check our Email Support Chart To see if your email client will be supported after the migration, and what effect if any the migration will have on your address books. For those formats no longer supported we have some address book conversion tools available for use. Current Mailx users can convert their addressbooks to Pine format using the tool /usr/local/bin/brk2pine.sh, or Mutt using /usr/local/bin/brk2mutt.sh. Elm users can use /usr/local/bin/elm2mutt to convert to Mutt format.
