Migrating your Socrates
Email Delivery to CalMail
To migrate delivery of your Socrates email to
CalMail, you will need to set up an account on CalMail, tell Socrates
to forward your mail to your new account, check your Socrates mail
one last time, and reconfigure your email client to retrieve your
messages from CalMail.
- Set Up
CalMail Account
- If you don't already have a CalMail account, set one up.
- Go to http://bilink.berkeley.edu, and click the
Email link under the Set up your account heading at the
upper left of the screen.
- Follow the
instructions that appear to create your new CalMail account. We
suggest that you select your username on CalMail to be the same as
the username on your Socrates account.
- Make a
note of your new CalMail username. You will be able to continue to
use your @socrates.berkeley.edu address after this process
is complete, but you can also start using your new calmail
@berkeley.edu address (e.g.
oski@berkeley.edu).
- If you do already have a CalMail account, make
sure that it is not forwarding messages to Socrates.
- Click Manage Your Account from the CalMail web
page (http://calmail.berkeley.edu) and enter your
CalMail username and password.
- Click on Manage mail
forwarding and automatic ("vacation") responses in the Account
Configuration section of the page that appears.
- Click Yes next to the Save incoming mail in my
inbox line
- Click No next to the
Forward incoming messages to another address line
- Click the Update button at the bottom of the
screen, then click the Logout link.
- Forward your mail from
Socrates to CalMail
- Connect to the Socrates Account Management page at https://socsvac.berkeley.edu:22443/
- Click on the Change
E-mail Forwarding/Auto-reply button, and enter your Socrates
username and password.
- Click the No button next to the Save incoming
mail in my inbox line.
- Click the Yes button next to the
Forward incoming messages to another address line, and enter
your new calmail address (e.g. oski@berkeley.edu) in the
address field.
- Click the Update button at the bottom of the
screen, then click the Logout link.
- Check for Email on
Socrates
After
completing the above two steps, your incoming mail will be redirected
to your acount on CalMail. You do, however, need to check mail on
Socrates one last time to make sure you have seen all of the mail
that arrived before you turned on the forwarding in step II.
- Check your Socrates
email, as you normally would
- Configure your email client to connect to
CalMail
Please Note: As of March 1, CalMail requires use of POP/SSL
and SMTP-Auth. For information and instructions regarding these
new security requirements please see Setting Up Your Email Program to Connect Securely to
CalMail (SSL/SMTP AUTH) or contact CalMail consulting via email at
consult@berkeley.edu or by phone at 510-642-7776.
- If you
are using Eudora
- Go to the Tools menu, then
select Options (on a Mac, go to the Special menu, then
select Settings).
- Click Getting
Started in the left hand column of the window that appears.
- Change the Mail Server from
socrates.berkeley.edu to
calmail.berkeley.edu.
- Change the
SMTP Server from socrates.berkeley.edu to
calmail.berkeley.edu. If the SMTP server is set to another
value (such as mail.earthlink.net) do not change it.
- If you selected (or already have) a different
username for your CalMail account, change your Username to the
new value. For example, for the email address
oski@berkeley.edu, the Username is oski.
- If you wish to continue using your
@socrates.berkeley.edu address for correspondence, enter
that address in the Return Address field. If you wish to use
your new @berkeley.edu address, enter that address in the
Return Address field.
- Click
OK.
- If you
are using another Email client (such as Microsoft Outlook, or Apple
Mac OS X Mail), make the following changes to your settings:
- Your Mail Server (sometimes Incoming Mail
Server or Pop Server) should be
calmail.berkeley.edu
- If your SMTP
Server is set to socrates.berkeley.edu, change it to
calmail.berkeley.edu. If it's set to something else (like
mail.earthlink.net), don't change it.
- If you selected (or already have) a different username
for your CalMail account, change your Username (sometimes
Account ID, User Name, or Login) to the new
value. For example, for the email address
oski@berkeley.edu, the Username is oski.
- If you wish to continue using your
@socrates.berkeley.edu address for correspondence, enter
that address in the Email Address field (sometimes Return
Address). If you wish to use your new @berkeley.edu
address, enter that address in the Email Address field.
Note: Even if step IV
doesn't work, you can still read and respond to your email on CalMail
through the CalMail website (http://calmail.berkeley.edu) until you can get
help reconfiguring your email client.
