English 45A Fall 2009: LITERATURE IN ENGLISH (CHAUCER TO MILTON)

Return to calling page.

NOTES AND ADMONITIONS ON CLASS BUSINESS (required reading)

1) Class participation in this English 45A is mandatory. Attendance will be taken often in lecture, always in Friday section. More than two unexcused absences in lecture will result in a reduction of your final grade by one grade step (e.g., from B to B-) for each such absence. Missing section, which is even more serious, will be dealt with by GSI. (In all cases, persistent tardiness will accumulate as unexcused absences.) Do not skip section on the day a paper is due for the sake of completing the paper!

2) You are expected to have read each assignment in advance of the class-period in which that assignment is discussed.

3) Each student must read a passage of Chaucer aloud to the satisfaction of the instructor or GSI, either individually or as part of a group. Several group readings will be organized during the semester, late-afternoons and evenings. Although you are not required to attend, you are urged to participate in at least one group reading.

4) You are reminded of the Department of English policy regarding plagiarism.

5) Final admonition: You are required to read all assignments over the semester. The mid-term and final examinations will be designed to test whether you have done the required reading. Failure to accomplish the required reading will be grounds for a failing final grade regardless of how well you may do in other aspects of this course.

Sections

Paper topics and deadlines will be set in section.

Final grades will be calculated as follows (with reductions for excessive absences):

Quiz totals           =   5%
2 papers @ 15% & 20%  =  35%
Midterm exam          =  15%
Final exam            =  25%
Section grade         =  20% (=55% including papers)
TOTAL                 = 100%
