STAC 5/O8/32/1: paper booklet of depositions taken 16 June 1580

Paper booklet of depositions taken 16 June 1580

The following transcription is an extremely rough draft, made from a hastily-written original transcript of answers taken down from dictation; the transcription was made, moreover, not from the original, but from photocopies which often cut off the tops and bottoms of individual pages. The transcriber's intention is to improve the work by reading against the original at the PRO in Summer 2001. Despite its current poor state, the transcription is approximately 95% complete, and contains many eye-witness accounts, all doubtless biased in favor of the particular deponent, of a "fray" which occured at Preston's Common in Essex over four days in April 1580.

For the sake of comprehensibility, all proper names have been capitalized; headings identifying deponents have been bold-faced; and a key with links has been supplied to allow quick access to each separate deposition.
