ANCIENT NEMEA

SANCTUARY OF ZEUS

HOUSES

Houses south of Xenon from the East. Man stands in the ancient road.

Alongside and south of the east-west road that runs next to the Xenon is a series of at least 8 houses.

House 1 from the South.

These had rubble foundations with a levelling course of broken rooftiles above which the walls were constructed of mudbrick.

Some were equipped with wells and others with cooking stands. The discovery of grinding stones and storage amphoras suggests a domestic character,

but a mug with an incised inscription (toË DiÒw = Zeus' property) shows that these houses were regarded as a part of the extended Sanctuary of Zeus.

A bronze weight which is stamped as officially Argive shows both the control of Argos and some sense of commercial activity.

The pottery shows that the houses were originally constructed in the second half of the 4th century B.C., and destroyed in the first half of the 3rd century, although lamps of the 3rd quarter of the 3rd century reveal a period of activity at that time as well. The houses may have been intended to shelter priests or other local officials during the games.
