Fellowships
We encourage you to investigate the fellowships listed below as a way to launch your career in public health. Fellowships are structured to provide significant work experiences and fellows are often expected to take on a great deal of responsibility quickly. Generally, fellows are provided with unique experiences that are not typically available to someone starting out in an entry-level position. The fellowships are listed chronologically by the last "known" deadline, but deadlines may change so be sure to check the links for the most current information.

Ambulatory Pediatric Association PAS Educational Scholars Program
This program is being offered to members of the Pediatric Academic Societies who wish to earn a Certificate of Excellence in Educational Scholarship. The curriculum includes didactic sessions, participation in and review of workshops, and a mentored project. Scholars will be expected to complete the full curriculum, including projects, over 3-4 years.

Student Employee Graduate Research Fellowship Program
The Student Employee Graduate Research Fellowship (SEGRF) Program has for many years played a critical role in helping to recruit new scientific and engineering talent to Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). Top students from the ten campuses of the University of California are granted up to four year fellowships to conduct research at the Laboratory while completing their thesis.

Catholic Healthcare West (CHW) Administrative Fellowship
CHW Fellowship offers prospective minority healthcare leaders the opportunity to gain both administrative and operational experience in the healthcare industry. This is a twelve-month rotational program: six months at the CHW Corporate Office in San Francisco, California and six months at a CHW acute care facility. In order to qualify, candidates must be in their last year of the graduate program, pursuing an MHA, MPH, MS, MSN or MBA from an accredited institution.

Henry Ford Health System Administrative Fellowship Program
The HFHS fellowship is a one-year appointment to one of three areas within HFHS: The Henry Ford Hospital, The Henry Ford Medical Group, or Health Alliance Plan. Although you will be assigned to one area, you will have the opportunity to explore all three areas through project work and organizational meetings. An executive from the area you will be working for serves as your preceptor (mentor) for the year and works with you to establish and complete your fellowship goals. Additionally, guidance and direction are given from the Fellowship Director and the Fellowship Coordinator at a corporate level to ensure that your goals are being met.
You will have the unique opportunity to get involved and interact with senior executives through direct participation in management activities including board meetings, executive staff meetings, retreats, community and philanthropic events, ongoing area and system projects, and countless other venues at the local, state, regional, and national levels.

Johns Hopkins Medicine Administrative Fellowship
This administrative fellowship is a two-year rotation-based program that is guided by a steering committee of key leaders from throughout the health system. The steering committee members also serve as the program's preceptors for each of the rotations and are committed to creating a premiere learning opportunity designed to create future leaders at Johns Hopkins. One of the members of the committee serves as an advisor to the fellow for the entire two years.

Robert Bosch Foundation Fellowship Program
Each year, the Bosch Fellowship’s nine-month work/study program enables 20 outstanding young American professionals to acquire an in-depth understanding of the political, economic and cultural environment of Germany and the European Union. From September through May, fellows complete two high-level internships-the first in federal or regional government institutions, and the second in private industry, mass media, or the non-profit sector. Fellows also participate in three intensive seminars with high-ranking government officials, as well as leading representatives from industry, media and academia, taking place in Berlin, Munich, Paris, Prague, Brussels, and other European cities.

The administrative fellowship offers an opportunity to learn about the organizational structure, philosophy, values, and mission of the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. M. D. Anderson has a fully integrated structure, including research, physician practice and hospital and clinical operations. Project-based in nature, the fellowship enables the fellow and the designated preceptor to determine the appropriate project portfolio that ensures a learning environment and the ability to translate academic theory into practice. Since the fellows are here to learn and grow as healthcare professionals, the fellows will plan their goals and objectives for the year and will refine these goals throughout the year with their preceptor.

AIP State Department Science Fellowship Program
In a report dated May 15, 2000, the State Department "recognizes the growing significance of science and technology based issues in foreign policy and is aware that this trend will continue and accelerate. The Department is determined to do what is necessary to respond to this challenge and to meet its responsibilities in this area..."
In response to this challenge, the American Institute of Physics collaborated with the Department of State, and with the American Association for the Advancement of Science, to establish an AIP State Department Science Fellowship program. Under this program, AIP will sponsor at least one Fellow annually to spend a year working in a bureau or office of the State Department. This is an opportunity for a scientist to provide scientific and technical expertise to the Department, and help raise awareness of the value of scientific input, while learning about and contributing to the foreign policy process.

California Department of Health Services: The California Epidemiologic Investigation Service (Cal-EIS)
The California Epidemiologic Investigation Service (Cal-EIS) is a one-year training program founded in 1988 for health professionals who have at least a master's degree in a field related to public health. Lawrence Fellowship
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory has established the Lawrence Fellowship, a prestigious postdoctoral fellowship program. The purpose of the fellowship is to pursue cutting-edge science and stimulate cross-fertilization of ideas. The fellows will have freedom to pursue world class research with ample resources to support their efforts. This fellowship has a three-year term. After this period, the fellows may consider any career options, including staying at the Laboratory. Typically, two to four fellowships are awarded each year.

Massachusetts General Hospital Administrative Fellowship
Although historically grounded in hospital-based training and administration, the Fellowship program also features the opportunity to work in the ambulatory care setting, which includes the MGH Wang Ambulatory Care Center, three community-based health centers, and the affiliated physician group practices of the Partners Network. The MGH is currently building a new ambulatory care facility, offering fellows additional opportunities to learn about health care planning, the provision of care in the outpatient setting, and the capital expansion process.

Michelson Fellowship Program
The Michelson Fellowship is an annual series of fellowship awards to promising young researchers at US institutions. The fellowship program is open to applicants in astronomy, physics, engineering, or related disciplines at the graduate and post-graduate level, and is renewable for a period of up to three years (subject to review and available funding).

Thomas Jefferson University Hospital’s Administrative Fellowship Program offers graduates with master’s degrees in healthcare and/or business administration practical experience in the operations of a large, urban-based academic medical center. Albert Schweitzer Fellowship
Each year since 1979, The Albert Schweitzer Fellowship has selected four senior medical students to spend three months working as Fellows at the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Lambaréné, Gabon on clinical rotations. Fellows are eligible for pediatrics or medicine rotations, and work as junior physicians, supervised by Hospital medical staff.

The Traineeships in AIDS Prevention Studies (TAPS) Program is inviting applications for two- and three-year postdoctoral fellowships in studies relating to the prevention of AIDS. Harvard University School of Public Health Post-Doctoral Fellowships in Health Services Research
MDs begin their fellowship experience by enrolling in the Harvard Summer Clinical Effectiveness Program. They may then elect to pursue a Master of Science or Master of Public Health degree during their tenure. Fellows who do not wish to pursue degrees are still encouraged to enroll in selected courses for credit or as an auditor. Fellows may attend seminars, colloquia, and other regularly scheduled research activities relating to their studies.

National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowships
The National Science Foundation aims to ensure the vitality of the human resource base of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in the United States and to reinforce its diversity by offering approximately 1,000 graduate fellowships in this competition. The Graduate Research Fellowship provides three years of support for graduate study leading to research-based master’s or doctoral degrees and is intended for students who are at the early stages of their graduate study. The Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) invests in graduate education for a cadre of diverse individuals who demonstrate their potential to successfully complete graduate degree programs in disciplines relevant to the mission of the National Science Foundation.

Naval Nuclear Propulsion Graduate Fellowship Program
The U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Naval Reactors is sponsoring a graduate fellowship program to encourage talented graduate students to pursue study and research, which includes reactor physics, materials science, two-phase flow, and reactor shielding. Fellowship students will receive full support for tuition and fees, a $2100 a month stipend, and a summer internship at one of two supporting research and development laboratories.

Wisconsin Population Health Fellowship Program
The Wisconsin Population Health Fellowship Program is a two-year service and training program designed for masters prepared individuals, in public health and allied sciences. Bixby Fellowship Program
The Population Council has created a new fellowship program to expand opportunities for recently trained population specialists and biomedical researchers. The Council's Fred H. Bixby Fellowship Program is a ten-year program, beginning in January 2007. The program will be highly competitive and will offer a limited number of fellowships each year. The Fred H. Bixby fellowships will allow citizens of developing countries to work with experienced mentors in the Council's network of offices.

CDC/NCHS Academy Health Policy Fellowship
The fellowship program brings visiting scholars in health services research-related disciplines to the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) in Hyattsville, Md. for a period of 13-24 months to conduct studies of interest to policymakers and the health services research community. Fellows have access to NCHS data resources for use in their proposed studies, and also work on collaborative projects with NCHS staff. Applicants may be at any stage in their career from doctoral students to senior investigators. Doctoral students must have completed course work and be at the dissertation phase of their program. Applicants must be US citizens, permanent residents, or able to acquire a valid work authorization.

Commonwealth Fund/Harvard University Fellowship in Minority Health Policy
The Commonwealth Fund/Harvard University Fellowship Program in Minority Health Policy is a one-year, full-time program designed to create physician-leaders who will pursue careers in minority health and health policy. Based at Harvard Medical School under the direction of Joan Reede, M.D., M.P.H., M.S., dean for diversity and community partnership, the fellowship combines an intensive year of training in health policy, public health, and management with special program activities on minority health issues. Applicants complete academic work for a master's degree in public health or public administration.

The Community Health Scholars Program has been designed to meet the growing needs of health professional schools, with emphasis on schools of Public Health, for faculty with community competency. Congressional Hunger Center Mickey Leland International Hunger Fellows Program
The Mickey Leland International Hunger Fellows Program is a two-year initiative that begins with a one-year field placement in countries throughout Asia, Africa, and Latin America. The second year of the program places fellows in a policy setting, often in the headquarters of the organizations in which they served during their first year, to focus on public policy and its effects on hunger, food security and poverty.

DOE Computational Science Graduate Fellowship
The Department of Energy Computational Science Graduate Fellowship (DOE CSGF) is a program funded by the Department of Energy’s Office of Science and National Nuclear Security Administration. Now entering its 15th year, the DOE CSGF trains scientists to meet the nation’s workforce needs and helps to create a nationwide interdisciplinary community. The fellowship provides support and guidance to some of the nation’s best scientific graduate students, and these graduates now work in DOE laboratories, private industry and educational institutions. The fellowship currently supports 63 students at 30 universities in 22 states. Nearly 225 students at more than 50 U.S. universities have trained as Fellows, and the demand is only growing.

Harvard University School of Public Health Fellowship in Cancer Epidemiology and Control
The Harvard School of Public Health's Departments of Society, Human Development and Health; Epidemiology; Nutrition; and the Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center Population Sciences invite applications for a joint fellowship in cancer prevention and control. The postdoctoral research fellowships are funded for two to three years and do not result in a degree. Applicants for a degree program must complete separate applications to the Harvard School of Public Health's Admissions Office and to the Cancer Prevention Program.

Kellogg Health Scholars Program (KHSP)
The Kellogg Health Scholars Program (KHSP) combines the highly successful Community Health Scholars Program (CHSP) and Scholars in Health Disparities Program (SHDP). This program offers two-year postdoctoral fellowships at 8 training sites. Eight fellowships are in the Multidisciplinary Track (which is based on SHDP) and eight fellowships are in the Community Track (which is based on CHSP). The first track highlights a multi-disciplinary approach to studying the social determinants of health disparities. The second track highlights community-academic partnering and community-based participatory research.. Both tracks highlight the translation of health research into policy.

NDSEG Fellowship Program
The DoD supports graduate students in a number of ways. First and foremost is the support of thousands of graduate students who are members of research teams funded through DoD contracts and grants. The students, selected by the research faculty, engage in fundamental studies under the leadership of a senior researcher and commensurately earn advanced degrees. Usually, these students are supported wholly by the DoD grant or contract.

New AID Foundation
The NEW AID foundation seeks to provide fellowships for masters and doctoral students in public halth. These stipends are to be used to conduct epidemiologic research outside the US in the area of non-HIV infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, malaria, dengue fever, trypanosomiasis, and several other illnesses that are typically neglected by western governments and pharmaceuticals. Villers Fellowship for Health Care Justice
The Villers Fellow works as a full-time policy analyst in Families USA's Health Policy Department. Designed to provide the fellow with a national perspective on health care justice work, the fellowship will be based in the Families USA office in Washington, D.C. and will afford the fellow the opportunity to learn about a range of health care justice issues. The Villers Fellow's primary responsibilities involve conducting primary and secondary research on a range of health care issues, including Medicaid, Medicare, the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), prescription drugs, and the private insurance market, as well as writing and contributing to publications that are relevant to current health policy debates.

The AJWS World Partners Fellowship is the newest AJWS volunteer program. As an offshoot of the AJWS Volunteer Corps, it is geared toward recent college graduates who wish to volunteer abroad with a non-governmental organization (NGO). We will be sending the third round of fellows in 2006.

American Society for Microbiology Microbiology Undergraduate Research Fellowship
The goal of the Microbiology Undergraduate Research Fellowship (MURF) program is to increase the number of underrepresented undergraduate students who wish to, and have demonstrated the ability to pursue graduate careers (Ph.D. or MD/Ph.D.) in microbiology. Students will have the opportunity to conduct full time summer research with an ASM member at their home institution or at a host institution, and present research results at the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students and the ASM General Meeting.

APAICS George Aratani/Daniel K. Inouye Fellowship
The fellowship is designed to provide a unique opportunity to an outstanding graduate student who has a commitment to the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities, and who plans to pursue a public policy career. ASPH/CDC Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE) Applied Epidemiology Fellowship
CSTE, in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH), has established this fellowship to train recent graduates in the expanding field of applied epidemiology. The goal of the fellowship is to provide a high quality training experience and to secure long-term career placement for fellows at the health agencies to which they are assigned. The Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH) Public Health Fellowship Program was established in 1995. Its goal is to address emerging needs of public health, and to provide leadership and professional opportunities at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (CDC/ATSDR) for students and graduate students of ASPH member graduate schools of public health. This is a one-year fellowship program designed for bachelor's or master's level scientists, with emphasis on the practical application of technologies, methodologies, and practices related to emerging infectious diseases. CDC Public Health Prevention Services
The Public Health Prevention Service (PHPS) is a 3-year training and service program for master's level public health professionals. The program focuses on public health program management and provides Prevention Specialists with experience in program planning, implementation, and evaluation through specialized hands-on training and mentorship at CDC and in state and local health agencies. In addition to on-the-job training, the PHPS program provides formal instruction in program management, epidemiology, survellance, emergency response and program evaluation. The Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH), in cooperation with CDC, announces four positions within the ASPH-CDC Prevention Research Centers (PRC) Minority Fellowship Program.
The PRC Minority Fellowship Program provides a unique training opportunity for under-represented minority students currently enrolled in doctoral level, research-based (e.g. PhD, DrPH, EdD, ScD) programs at schools of public health or accredited universities with a CDC-funded PRC. The trainees gain practical, first-hand experience in prevention research and contribute to expanding minority representation in the public health prevention research workforce.
We are seeking individuals who have the educational preparation, skills and commitment to conduct applied research in disease prevention and control and to be a part of a large network of academic researchers, public health agencies, and community members. Their proposed projects must be related to PRC activities and endorsed by PRC Directors.

Primary Health Care Fellowship
The fellowship is offered full-time and will be awarded for a maximum of four years and may be divided between two different Australian institutions. The Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellowship Act was signed into law in November 1994. Selected teachers spend up to one year in a Congressional Office or a federal agency. City of Hope Distinguished Fellowship in Molecular Epidemiology
The ideal candidate holds a M.D. or M.D., Ph.D. degree, has demonstrated exceptional scientific potential and is completing specialty clinical training. Herbert York Postdoctoral Fellow
In coordination with the University of California and the Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has established a postdoctoral fellowship program named after LLNL's first director, Herbert York. In addition to serving as the Lab's first director, Herb was the founding chancellor of the University of California, San Diego, and was the founder and director of the UC Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation. Throughout his career, Herb demonstrated strong leadership in arms control, and dedicated his career to linking science with public policy. This fellowship has been established in recognition of this commitment.
International Development Fellows Program (IDFP)
The Catholic Relief Services (CRS) International Development Fellows Program is intended to give people who are interested in a career in international relief and development an opportunity to increase their overseas experience and gain broad exposure to CRS programs. Each year, CRS has approximately 20 placements with our country programs (based overseas). Assignments are for one year.
Junior Professional Officer (JPO) Programme
JPOs serve primarily in one of the country offices of the participating agencies in the developing countries. Under the supervision of a senior staff member, JPOs work with international and national staff and are involved in the identification, design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the UN agencies-supported programmes. Purposes of assignments vary and may have a country-specific, regional, sector-based or thematic focus. Luis W. Alvarez Postdoctoral Fellowship in Computational Science
The Luis W. Alvarez Fellowship in Computational Science aims to achieve these goals by enabling a recent graduate with a Ph.D. (or equivalent) to acquire further scientific training and to develop professional maturity for independent research. This fellowship embodies the positive attributes of the two FE Internship programs - Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Hispanic Internship Programs - showcases their strengths and accomplishments, establishes a third internship program, i.e., the Tribal Colleges and Universities, and addresses participation by disabled students all into one broad-based program that envisions the creation of a model organizational culture at the Department of Energy for the new millennium.
Middle East Research Awards Program
Since its inception MEAwards has fostered interdisciplinary work and given regional scholars the opportunity to work on emerging issues. In addition to studies of demographic dynamics, MEAwards projects have addressed community health, child labor, population displacement, gender, policy reform, and poverty. The MEAwards program has also been particularly concerned with exploring relevant research methodologies and disseminating findings to the larger public and policy communities.

Pasteur Foundation Post Doctoral Fellowship
These three-year fellowship positions are open to US citizens not currently in France wishing to work in the laboratories of the Institut Pasteur. Located in Paris and founded by Louis Pasteur in 1887, the Institut Pasteur is one of the world's leading private nonprofit centers for infectious disease research. With 2500 people of over 70 nationalities, its 130 research labs are devoted to the basic science of improving global public health. W.K. Kellogg Foundation Scholars in Health Disparities
The Kellogg Scholars in Health Disparities Program is preparing a new generation of minority scientists for careers and leadership roles in health disparities research, health policy research and health policy and practice. The program is supporting a cadre of creative thinkers - largely from minority groups and with a passion for health equity and social justice - trained in behavioral and social science disciplines, epidemiology and related biomedical sciences and public policy. Minority groups have been under-represented to date in leadership roles in academic health-related careers and in national health and public policy development.
World Bank
The Scholarship Program and the Fellowships Program are vehicles for knowledge sharing and capacity building in the developing world. The Programs provide opportunities for graduate studies leading to master's degree in development-related fields for mid-career professionals from the World Bank member countries, eligible to borrow. WBI supplements its training programs through the management of two programs.
Zaru-Mikhail Fellowship
The Zaru-Mikhail Fellowship is for recent college graduates interested in peace and justice issues, with a particular focus on the Middle East. Fellows gain skills in U.S.-based organizing on international issues.
