Automaticity vs. Control
Devine (1989):
Implicit knowledge of stereotypes is fairly universal
Stereotypes are automatically activated in the presence of a group member (or symbol of)
Low prejudice (deliberate; on questionnaire) responses require controlled inhibition
When controlled inhibition is precluded, high and low prejudice people will exhibit bias
When control is allowed, high and low prejudice people will differ in their responses and behavior
