Introductions and general discussion

This first session will be focused on introductions, gathering ideas for subsequent sessions, as well as general discussion.  We look forward to having time for open discussion as there have been an array of climate policy related developments since our last session in the spring -- including new science, debates over attribution of hurricanes, and the announcement of the Governor's greenhouse gas targets for California. Also, please come with ideas for what you'd like to discuss this semester and any suggestions for potential speakers.

ICLEI and Cities for Climate Protection

In this session I'll describe ICLEI's role in U.S. climate change work, focusing on our Cities for Climate Protection (CCP) campaign.  Over 160 local jurisdictions in the U.S. are providing significant leadership toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions as CCP participants.  ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability is an international membership association of local governments dedicated to achieving tangible improvements in global environmental conditions through the cumulative actions of local governments.

Feedbacks in the climate system

Missing from current climate models are feedback mechanisms coupling climate and ecosystems. Results from analysis of past climate change, from ongoing climate manipulations in ecosystems, and from observations of ecosystems along climate gradients suggest that climate-ecosystem feedbacks could be large and positive, and thus future warming may be considerably more intense than is currently anticipated.  Nevertheless, there are huge gaps in our understanding of future ecosystem responses to global warming.
