a reprise of the history in Basic Questions:

The Metaphysics of Being as Presence

The Presocratic Greeks were facinated by the truth of all beings as such:
that is, they (first) experienced wonder at it all.
Their experience of Being was of showing up.

Plato began metaphysics by overlooking the clearing, and being led to make
absolute claims about the Being(ness) of beings: about what it is for beings to be.
Arisotle made truth into correctness or correspondance, and so actually denied
   the clearing.

Through the next epochs of understandings of beings, the West faced a gradual
loss of meaning: because it was cut off from the clearing, it had no access to
   the ground of meaningful differences.
This led to nihilism: that is, to laid-back pluralism, with a mood of
distress/terror, which is where we are now.

A possible future
?? Our terror may shift into into restraint (that is, into terror mixed with awe).
?? With Heideggerís help, we may move into wonder once again:
this would be preparatory thinking: ëformal, without contentí
?? A future god might inaugurate a committed pluralism:
that is, an understanding of being that reveals itself as just one style
among others, and as needing us as its preservers.
