The strong version:
ó What it means to be is to show up: to be unconcealed.
ó Without an understanding of being, nothing shows up as anything.
ó A world is all-governing: everything that shows up at all shows
up as intelligible in the light
of that world.
óÝEarth comes into its own only in its striving with world: it
is what palpably resists being
taken up by world, but it always does so in a particular way,
within a specific rift-design.
So, we can only ask about, and experience, things within the
clearing, in the lighting of world. It makes no sense to ask about
what is apart from the clearing: even earth, as the self-concealing, as
what resists unconcealment, is, and is in a particular way in its striving
with world.
The weak version:
ó Truth is essentially in the untruth: unconcealment is an ongoing
happening, a winning out,
always partial of being from concealment.
ó Concealment (earth?) is the reservoir of the not-yet-uncovered
(OWA 60): of the things and
their aspects that might get lit up in some world. So some things
are possible and others not.
ó World discloses ëall the phenomena that distinguish the ageí
(AWP 115), but that need not
mean allÝthings whatsoever: some things are just ëbelow the
radarí.
ó Worlds are not static or totally totalizing: they come to incorporate
more things and
phenomena.
óÝMarginal practices show up in a sufficiently intelligible way
that they can be taken up in a
new understanding of being by people.
ó The attainment of a unified understanding of being is (supposed
to be) a unique Western
happening; surely other cultures experience and talk about things.
So, there must be something outside of a clearing, at least some
matter or stuff, perhaps some things or practices. This stuff and/or
things then get disclosed within worlds in various ways. To the extent
that we do experience that stuff, that un-unconcealed, it is as earth,
in striving with world, but we can determine that there must
be stuff beyond the reach of our experience.
Questions:
Does earth play a distinctive role in works of art?
Does earth play roles of different importance in different understandings
of being, or is it a
general feature of all understandings of being?
How is earth different from concealment?
Quotes:
ìIn essential striving, the opponents raise each other into the self-assertion
of their natures.î (OWA 49)
ìThanks to this clearing, beings are unconcealed in certain changing
degreesî (OWA 53)
ìThe earth is not simply the Closed but rather that which rises up
as self-closing. World and earth are always intrinsically and essentially
in conflict, belligerent by nature. Only as such do they enter into
the conflict of clearing and concealing. Earth juts through the world
and world grounds itself on earth only so far as truth happens as the primal
conflict between clearing and concealing.î (OWA 55)
ìTruth is untruth, insofar as there belongs to it the reservoir of
the not-yet-uncovered, the un-uncovered, in the sense of concealmentî (OWA
60)
ì...truth works only by installing itself within a particular beingî
(OWA 69)
ìDoes truth, then, arise out of nothing? It does indeed if by
nothing is meant the mere not of that which is, and if we here think of
that which is as an object present in the ordinary way...Truth is never
gathered from objects that are present and ordinary. Rather, the
opening up of the Open, the clearing of what is, happens only as the openness
is projected, sketched out, that makes its advent in thrownness.î (OWA
71)
ìThe Greeks understand by Being the constant presence of something
(BQ 67)î
