Hubert Dreyfus, Being-in-the-World: A Commentary on Division I of Being and Time, MIT, Press.

Requirements

Approximately 50 pages of difficult reading per week. Two eight-page papers and attendance at weekly discussion sections.

Prerequisites

The best preparation for the course would be Philosophy l87 (Being and Time) and/or courses on Hegel, Nietzsche, or Foucault, but later Heidegger’s writings represent such a radical break with early Heidegger and with traditional philosophy that any philosophy course may help somewhat and none will help all that much.
