Brief Overview of IRLE

The Institute for Research on Labor and Employment (IRLE) is an "Organized Research Unit" of the University of California at Berkeley. IRLE was founded in 1945. Its first director was UC President Emeritus Clark Kerr. The current Director is Michael Reich.

IRLE brings together faculty from several academic departments and supports multidisciplinary research about labor and employment relations. IRLE sponsors many faculty-run research centers; links to all of the centers may be found on the Programs page.

IRLE sponsors numerous community service programs, including the California Public Employee Relations, Center for Labor Research and Education, and the Labor Project for Working Families. It publishes the widely respected academic journal, Industrial Relations: A Journal of Economy and Society, and houses an important research library that collects and preserves a wide array of information about work, organizations and labor issues.

There is a wealth of information about IRLE and its programs on this server. The principal entry points for further information are the Programs, Publications and The Library. Faculty working papers are also available, and are published in electronic format under the auspices of several different IRLE units.
