Outreach and educational activities

Many of our outreach activities involve Lawrence Hall of Science, Berkeley’s science museum.  Another excellent science museum with a Berkeley connection is the Exploratorium.

Physics for non-physicists:

The Berkeley physics department offers courses targeted at students of other departments, most notably the “Physics for Future Presidents” course created by Richard Muller (includes podcasts).  I taught a freshman seminar on “Physics and politics of nuclear weapons” as part of this effort.

Research experience for undergraduates:

We do not have a formal REU program, but supervise advanced undergraduates during the academic year and, rarely, on a paid basis during the summer.

Writings on condensed matter physics for a general audience:

I recently served on a DOE Grand Challenges subcommittee chaired by Graham Fleming (UCB/LBNL) and Mark Ratner (Northwestern).   My own involvement was primarily with the fourth chapter, on the emergence of collective phenomena.

As part of the viewer’s guide for the powerofsmall.org website, I wrote an introduction to nanoscience and nanotechnology for lay readers, on pages 5-7.
