Desmond was a legendary scientist. He was also a very charming man. I shall always remember the time he gave me with Betty. I shall remember their cabin near Point Reyes. I shall remember walking along Drake beach. I shall remember the house and the little garden on Yosemite and the lamb with mint sauce, and the collection of ancient maps of Africa...All these memories are dear to my heart. Desmond was a gentleman. He always made me feel at home in the US, just as he was at the end of his professional odyssey .
