I was very saddened to hear of the death of Desmond Clark. His extraordinary achievements in African archaeology will be an enduring monument, and a measure of what an extraordinary man can achieve in one lifetime. His work is something we all still call on. At a personal level I consider one of my most treasured books a copy of the Stone Age Cultures of the Horn of Africa, inscribed to Miles Burkitt. The first time I met him was when, as an undergraduate at Cambridge, I was invited as 'the token student' to the celebration when he was awarded his Sc.D. The inivitation was to 'tea' and I turned up in casual clothes and sandals on a very hot afternoon - only to find the Cambridge great and good in dinner jackets, gowns and caps. Desmond went out of his way to make me feel at home - "you're the only person sensibly dressed" he shouted out.
