I wish I could say that I knew J.
Desmond Clark well. Unfortunately, I only had the opportunity to
meet him a few times. Of course I know his fundamental contributions
to African archaeology and to prehistory in general. But what most
impressed me about Prof. Clark was the liveliness of his intellect,
and the degree to which he remained engaged with the field throughout
his life. I last saw him at the SAA meetings two years ago. I have
a very vivid memory of him sitting through several symposia--always
in the front row. After the talks were finished he would invariably
buttonhole one or two of the speakers and quiz them about their
work. We should all hope to be so excited about and vitally involved
with our field for such a long time.
