I was a visiting professor in anthropology
for the Spring term in 1999. My office was across the hall from
Desmond's office in the Archaeological Research Facility. We struck
up an immediate friendship. Although Desmond was very busy, he took
the time to chat with me, took me out to lunch, invited me to his
house, and showed the kind of hospitality that makes a visitor to
a new place feel welcome and part of the community. I'll always
remember those times with him, talking about anthropology and many
other topics. Such an amazing mind, and such a nice guy.
