J. Desmond Clark

The passing of Desmond marks the end of an era. Everything that he did was on a grand scale: Africa was his back yard and he had touched each of its stones, knowing them all by name. He knew more sites, more industries, more assemblages than anyone else and nothing gave him more pleasure than sharing his experience with others. Despite his status he was happy to spend a conference evening listening to an undergraduate student. He gave his time and his praise generously; he was miserly with criticism. Desmond, you are sorely missed.
