Desmond's Britishness sometimes
bemused his American friends. In 1971 I went to Desmond's lab on
a post-doc. he had very little idea of what I was doing but was
very welcoming, including an invitation to Christmas dinner. Various
luminaries such as Clark Howell were there along with the Isaacs
and Roddens. Having been fed large whiskies at the door (Betty called
this her secret party weapon) it seems quite in the English Christmas
spirit when Desmond and Betty started throwing pieces of bread across
the table at their guests and at each other. We joined in but most
of the American guests were completely taken aback. Desmond and
Betty roared with laughter and said it was their old custom.
