Teaching Philosophy

I love the field of linguistics and have found that there is an endless supply of new theories and new phenomena that are endlessly fascintating. I believe that some students are like me and every aspect of linguistics will interesting to them while for others there may be only one aspect of linguistics they find cool. Whether it's the mathematical properties of formal logic, the sociology surrounding sound change, the history that is part of doing historical linguistics or the computer science involved in natural language processing, my job is to help the student find that one thing they will latch on to.
I was also never too bothered by the expectation that class be entertaining. I'm in class for as long as the students are; if I entertain them, maybe they'll entertain me, too.
