Classics 10B: Introduction to Roman Civilization

Syllabus

The course presents an overview of the highlights of Roman civilization with particular emphasis on major literary works and how they reflect Roman culture. Many lectures will be supplemented with slides and/or video. The discussion sections will provide information and an opportunity to write on and discuss topics addressed in the lectures and the readings. A series of three films will be shown outside the regular lecture hour; these are required viewing, either at the scheduled viewing session or in the Media Center in Moffitt Library.

The required reader for the course is sold at University Copy Service, 2425 Channing Way; it will be needed and available by the fourth week of the semester. Three films are required viewing. Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum Tuesday, February 18th, 6-8 pm, 117 Dwinelle Hall

Discussion section participation is an important part of this course and is required.
 
Grading: 20% discussion section participation and graded work, including attendence, worksheets for the three films viewed, other in-class written work, and quizzes (2 absences are permitted; thereafter, each missed section will result in a lower grade)

15% response papers due at the beginning of each section meeting (except for Week 1) (2 missed papers are permitted; thereafter, each missed paper will result in a lower grade)

25% mid-term examination; no make-ups. 

40% final examination.

Examinations and quizzes may include essays, short answers, identifications, matching or other "objective" formats, and map/chronology questions.

Please note: I will make every attempt to make special accommodations for particular needs and circumstances. However, with a large class, allowing early, late, or makeup examinations is very problematic. Please plan to take each examination on the date it is scheduled. Note that the final is Group 7: Monday, May 19th, 12:30-3:30. No alternative date for the final will be offered.
