Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais
             Praca da Liberdade (Liberty Square)

Belo Horizonte is the capital of the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Located about 400 Km from the sea inside the low, rounded mountains of Minas Gerais it is very well populated (about 2 million people, but if you count all the urban area including Contagem, Betim and other cities nearby the population can go well beyond 3 million). Although its large size Belo Horizonte still have some characteristics of a small town, between them the hospitality of its people (Minas' towns are well known in Brazil for its nice people). BH is not as messy as other Brazilian Metropolitan areas, like Sao Paulo or Rio de Janeiro, but the traffic is really getting worse and worse because of its thin old streets. The city was founded in 1897, and was all pre-designed for horse traffic (I guess!); that's why all the streets make a system of squares inside the Contorno's avenue that was supposed to be the beltway of the city. Nowadays BH has grown so much way beyond Contorno's avenue.
In the site vist@erea you can browse through a high definition satellite view of Belo Horizonte. I was even able to get a reasonable aerial view of my family's building over there (see below).

My family's building is right in the middle of this picture; It has a thin rectangular shape, with a swimming pool and a little soccer court to the left of it

One of the most exciting things about Belo Horizonte is the nightlife; the city has an incredible amount of pubs, clubs and restaurants that stay open until the last customer. People start hanging out late, about 11pm or even midnight on fridays and saturdays, and they stay in the bars sometimes until 4, 5am. Everything is considerably cheaper for those who are used to the prices in USA.
