The Research Center for Romance Studies was established within the division of International and Area Studies at the University of California, Berkeley, in October 1997. The purpose of the Center is to disseminate research relating to the literary and linguistic history of the Romance languages. No teaching programs are fostered by or associated with the Research Center.

The Research Center's activities have three principal goals: publication of the journal Romance Philology, establishment of a monograph series in honor of Yakov Malkiel, and organization of symposia and colloquia dedicated to current research in the field.

The Research Center is operated by the Program Director and the Principal Editor in conjunction with its Advisory Committee, whose members are appointed for five years.
