Presentation
"What Every Citizen Should Know About
Grassroots Community Organizing"
Social Welfare Library
10:30 a.m. - 12 noon
Everyone
wants change! Although we are often long on passion and well-versed on issues
that we care about, we can be short on organizing know-how. This workshop
will introduce social workers and those interested in effecting social change
to the principles of grassroots community organizing and to the "strategy
chart," an important tool to help groups think through strategy and tactics.
Trained in the Alinsnky tradition, Claudia Albano has more than 20 years of
experience in social action organizing. She is the Neighborhood Services Manager
with the City of Oakland, where she is responsible for working with residents
to solve problems through an innovative program that combines community organizing
practice with community policing philosophy. Previously, she developed and
managed the Office of Neighborhoods for the City of Fremont, where her community
engagement program received an award for innovation from the International
Association of Chiefs of Police. She teaches a course in grassroots community
organizing every fall at the School of Social Welfare.
