UC BERKELEY WAR CRIMES STUDIES CENTER

 

 

Summer Institute, May 11-24, 2008: Developing Informed Approaches to International Humanitarian Law, International Criminal Law and Human Rights Law in the Asia-Pacific Region

The 2008 Summer Institute for International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights (Summer Institute 2008) is an advanced two-week workshop designed for participants working across a broad range of fields and disciplines related to IHL and Human Rights. The workshop is best suited to people working within the Asia-Pacific region or with an Asia-Pacific focus. Summer Institute 2008 seeks to attract journalists, NGO workers, investigators, monitors, government agency workers, as well as lawyers and advanced law students to participate.

Undergraduate Research Apprenticeship

The War Crimes Studies Center participates in UC Berkeley's Undergraduate Research Apprenticeship Program (URAP) in which the research apprentice will pick a group of trials to work on for unit credit. The research will involve reading through the trial records and preparing reports on particular cases, or working on our database project for the Center's website. Professor Cohen will meet regularly with the student to discuss the cases. It is expect that this work would involve about 6-10 hours per week. Some background in WWII, or the conflicts in Sierra Leone, Rwanda, the former Yugoslavia, Darfur, or East Timor would be helpful. Experience with databases, electronic publishing, or web design would also be an asset. There will be opportunities for students who continue to work in the Center for several semesters to apply for fieldwork opportunities at the tribunals.
