How to donate to CLAS
The
Center for Latin American Studies is very much on the go.
Here are some of our recent highlights:
 |
 |
Paulo
Lins, the author of City of God,
and a visiting scholar at CLAS in spring 2004. |
President Ricardo
Lagos speaking at Berkeley during his stay
as a visiting scholar in fall 2006. |
- Visiting
Scholar Program: In the fall of 2006, Ricardo Lagos, President
of Chile (2000-2006), was a Senior Scholar in Residence
at CLAS. During his stay, President Lagos taught a one-month
special seminar on “Development and Democracy
in Latin America.” The Visiting Scholar program brings
to Berkeley some of the most significant actors and thinkers
in Latin America, and ensures that our students are receiving
the most dynamic curriculum available.

- Student
Research: Each year CLAS funds student research
in Latin America. In 2006, we awarded grants to thirty-two
students for summer research projects in Argentina, Bolivia,
Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, Puerto
Rico and Venezuela. This financial support has helped students
conduct field research crucial to developing global expertise.
Last year, funding allowed a group of graduate students to
pursue a research project on drinking water safety in rural
Mexico. Their research resulted in the publication of a CLAS
Policy Paper and has received wide attention
on both sides of the border.

- CLAS
Program: We continue our unique emphasis on connecting
policymakers in the Americas with our network of Latin
Americanist students and faculty. Our program of events
provides students and the Berkeley community with an unprecedented
opportunity to complement their academic study with ongoing
developments in the region. Recent highlights have included
programs with Gilberto Gil, Brazil's Minister
of Culture and a bossa nova musician;Rigoberta
Menchú, the Guatemalan
1992 Nobel Peace Prize winner for her work on indigenous
rights; Isabel Allende, the Chilean best-selling
author of 15 books, and Cristina Fernández de Kirchner,
Peronist Senator and First Lady of Argentina.

student grants, Visiting Scholar salaries, and a vibrant program
bringing academics, artists, political and social leaders to
the University of California, Berkeley. You can designate your
gift in one of three ways.
Student
Summer Research Grants: The generosity of our donors allows
us to award research grants to our students, making possible
hands-on education in their field of study.
Visiting
Scholar Funds: By designating your gift for Visiting Scholars,
you allow us to expand our offering of semester courses
and special seminars, ensuring that our students can engage
with a variety of key Latin Americanist actors and thinkers.
Center
for Latin American Studies Program Fund: This
kind of giving provides flexible funds to build our organizational
capacity.
