Enrique Peņalosa
"Towards a More Socially and Environmentally
Sustainable Third World City"

April 8, 2002

Mr. Peņalosa's term as the mayor of Bogota saw many improvements in pedestrian and public spaces, as well as to public transport, in an effort to make the city more environmentally and socially sustainable. The images below document some of those efforts.

The effects of private ownership of land in a Third World city.

A new public library for Bogota

Another new public library, this one linked to a pedestrian street in Tintal

The public good would be better served if this urban golf club were turned into a park

A new 17-kilometer pedestrian street running through the city

A new park, school and daycare center with an indoor swimming pool served by the pedestrian street to the left

Before and after pictures of a new 45-kilometer greenway running through the city

Two further pictures of the new 45-kilometer greenway

By 2015, 80% of the population of Bogota should live within 500 meters of a Transmilenio station (Bogota's modern high-capacity bus system)
