The
Center for Latin American Studies and the Brazilian
Ministry of Culture proudly celebrated the inauguration
of the Mário de Andrade Chair in Brazilian
Culture at the University of California, Berkeley.
Along with a lecture on Poesia e filosofia delivered
by Benedito Nunes, the more than 100 people in attendance
enjoyed a selection of Brazilian music (including
the music of Heitor Villa Lobos) performed by Ricardo
Peixoto and Claudia Villela. Those in attendance
were also welcomed by Georges Lamazière, the
Consul General of Brazil in San Francisco; Márcio
Souza, the President of Funarte, Brazil's
National Foundation of the Arts; and Professors Candace
Slater (Director of Berkeley's Townsend Center for
the Humanities) and Harley Shaiken (chair of the
Center for Latin American Studies).

Peixoto, performed a variety of music from
Brazilian artists such as Jobim and Villa Lobos,
as well as original songs, to a delighted crowd. |

After
the presentations, inauguration and music of
the celebration, the overflow crowd enjoys
a reception in the Seaborg Room at Berkeley's
Faculty Club.
