2007 Tinker Summer Research Updates

The following are updates filed by 2007 CLAS Summer Research Grant Recipients.

Beautiful vistas are part of life in the highlands of Peru.

Matt Sayre is a sixth year Ph.D. student studying archaeology in the Department of Anthropology. He has been at Peru’s Chavín de Huantar archeological dig, researching the site’s ancient history with special emphasis on food and ecological practice.

Matt warns us to be wary of the “‘new road’ from Catac to Huari as it has fallen apart fallen apart in less than two years—as the archaeologists predicted.” He also found a bit of frustration in the proper phrasing of bureaucratic documents necessary for his research. Nevertheless, he is impressed that Japanese firms are funding new museums near the site.

Above all, however, Matt encourages visitors to the Huaraz region not spend all their time indoors. He cautions visitors to not to leave without exploring the natural beauty of the Cordillera Blanca or the Pastoruri glacier (which global warming may melt in the next seven years).

To talk to Matt more about his research and travels in Chavín de Huantar, you may research him at sayre (at) berkeley (.) edu.
