CASES is a software package for collecting survey data based on structured questionnaires, using telephone or face-to-face interviewing as well as self-administered procedures. It is developed, distributed and supported by the
Computer-assisted Survey Methods (CSM) Program at the University of California at Berkeley. CSM is a part of the Social Science Computing Laboratory (SSCL), within the campus organization for Information Systems and Technology (IST).
CSM is a not-for-profit organization that is dedicated to enhancing the use of information technology within survey-related organizations in the academic, governmental, and private sectors.
For over 20 years, CASES has been used in several countries and is one of the most frequently used systems in the United States. CASES is backed by a dedicated team of specialists whose continuing activities are primarily supported by the Association for Computer-assisted Surveys
(ACS), an international consortium of survey-related organizations.
CASES:
- can be used for telephone interviewing (CATI), personal interviewing (CAPI), self-administered questionnaires (CASAQ), and data entry from paper (CADE)
- provides options for designers to:
- create forms (questions/answers) in a text-based language, which are automatically converted into graphical forms
- create graphical forms directly in a visual Instrument Development Environment (IDE), or
- use a combination of both procedures in the same instrument
- gives the designer a high degree of flexibility in the style and format in which forms are displayed, whether they are defined by text or visually
- can handle very large numbers of cases, variables, and simultaneous users
- can read and write external files and execute programs outside CASES
- does not require knowledge of standard programing language
- is a powerful software package at a reasonable price
